Digital CoronaVirus: Yet Another Ransomware Combined with Infostealer
At the moment, scammers are trying to cash in by sending out emails that promise pandemic relief money. The emails impersonate official entities such as the U.S. Federal Reserve or other official institutions. With subject lines like “Receive Payment” or “Relief Payment Form”, anxious users are motivated to click on a link that redirects to a phishing website, which tries to steal personal information or online banking credentials. Other email variants use these stimulus bills as bait to deliver a password protected “COVID 19 Relief.doc” document that contains a financial trojan or ransomware. And we still see waves of classic COVID-19 themed malware threats making the rounds. One such threat example that we came across recently dropped a combination of ransomware and infostealer malware.

WhatsApp users' phones hacked by sophisticated spyware attack
Time to update. WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging apps, is racing to close a security flaw that could give hackers access to sensitive personal data and real-time communications. This particular type of attack is dangerous because the spyware is activated regardless of whether or not WhatsApp users answer the call. Once infected, attackers can access, modify, and sell all the personal data stored on your phone or take over control of the microphone and camera.  Here's the latest and a few tips that will help minimize the threat in the future.

RanSim Adds Cryptojacking Scenarios and Acronis Active Protection Continues Showing Excellent Results
We’ve blogged about RanSim before: it’s a nice tool from KnowBe4, a security awareness training company that employs the famous former hacker, Kevin Mitnick. They help people learn about IT security and prepare for various security threats. RanSim originally served as a ransomware simulator – allowing users to see if their systems were protected against ransomware attacks without the risk of the real thing. Recently, KnowBe4 updated RanSim so that it also emulates cryptojackers – the latest, fast-growing malware threat that targets computers and mobile devices to hijack system resources to secretly mine cryptocurrency – and Acronis' cyber protection technology performed extremely well.

Acronis Foundation builds a new school in Tanzania for 500 children
In its continuing mission to spread and protect knowledge around the world, the Acronis Foundation marked a new milestone last week by opening a school in the small village of Loongung, Tanzania. The new school, which was built in partnership with the local community and the German-based non-profit Fly & Help, will provide more than 500 children with access to education. While Acronis funded the school and it was constructed in partnership between the Acronis Foundation and Fly & Help, ensuring the villagers retained total control over their children’s education was of the utmost importance. That is why the school building has been donated to Loongung with no strings attached.

Black Ruby: Combining Ransomware and Coin Miner Malware
In the midst of all the news and hype surrounding cryptocurrency, we’ve seen several coin miner malware programs popping into the wild, infecting a number of computers on the internet. There’s been an upsurge in coin miner malware that victimizes individual PCs and businesses using the same techniques and exploits that were previously attributed to distributed ransomware. With all this happening, the cybersecurity industry started speculating that there is a shift from ransomware to coin miners as the preferred choice of payload for cybercriminals. Interestingly, we found a new ransomware called Black Ruby that adds coin mining as a module on top of its ransomware capabilities.

Rapid Ransomware Keeps Encrypting New Files in Background
The Rapid ransomware variant began attacking victims at the end of December 2017, according to the ID ransomware service Malwarehunterteam. This ransomware strain is interesting and unique because it keeps running even after encryption is completed, and continues encrypting files once they are created. Our team analyzed a new sample that was compiled a week ago.
